Unified Digital Radio Communication System (EDR) supports flood control efforts

Pro-M Zrt. that operates the EDR system makes over 8.5 million HUF contribution to emergency flood control efforts.

Budapest, June 11, 2010 – The high waters due to the extraordinary rainfalls of the past weeks caused unprecedented damage in several regions of the country. Pro-M Zrt., subsidiary of Magyar Telekom Plc., provides stand-by emergency communication for the cooperation, communication of the flood control forces of over 23.000 people (police, firefighters, soldiers, water management crews, volunteers) with the EDR (Unified Digital Radio Communication) system based on TETRA technology. Pro-M Zrt. treats the extra costs of the field operations as donation to the flood and damage control efforts. This amount exceeds HUF 8.5 million.

The company supports the radio coverage of the outlying areas by installing mobile EDR base stations, thus ensuring congestion-free emergency communication. The mobile base stations, which also use satellite technology, cover the areas most severely stricken by the flood and help reach the flood control vehicles (e.g. patrol lifeboats) in a concentrated manner.

’The flood control operations require extensive and complex organization work, to which the EDR system and its services provide indispensable technology. In extraordinary disaster situations prompt response, quick action and organized control are crucial in order to organize an appropriate emergency presence. The technology provided by Pro-M Zrt, with the background support of the Business Services Business Unit (T-Systems), make it possible to give fast and reliable help in disaster and emergency situations’, said Pro-M Zrt. CEO Béla Kozma.

Magyar Telekom, the parent of Pro-M Zrt. announced on Tuesday that it will give HUF 60 million assistance to the flood control works and also 200 T-Mobile Domino prepaid cards to the inhabitants of the hardest-hit settlements and the population involved in the rescue operations. The mobile phone donation of the company will also reach the beneficiaries through the Red Cross.

On Wednesday Magyar Telekom announced a donation campaign among its employees. The company will supplement the employee donations by twice the amount and will continuously send the proceeds to the flood victims through the Red Cross.
